Description of the Course

This class will focus on Danish language and culture as integrated components. Thus, the study of the language will be used as an opener for studying culture and vice versa, and we will approach both the language and the culture from multiple perspectives.

You will enhance your language comprehension from level I (speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities). We will be studying the Danish grammar and implement it in your active spoken language as well as practice grammatical analysis of various texts in Danish, including newspaper articles, excerpts of literature, and Danish poetry.

We will study identities and cultural representations of Copenhagen and Denmark further through various approaches. Among other things, we will analyze the New Year’s speeches by the Queen and the Prime Minister of Denmark; we will study and discuss recent cultural canons and contemporary approaches to cultural heritage. Through modern art, tv, theater, contemporary exhibitions, and poetic responses we will delve into the current debates on the refugee situation in Denmark, immigration, gender equality, #meetoo, etc.

Learning Objectives of the Course

This course will allow you to:

  • improve your practical language skills from Danish Language and Culture Level I.
  • gain a general understanding of language structure and grammatical analysis.
  • study selected works of Danish literature, poetry, art, and performance.
  • develop a nuanced understanding of Danish culture, society, and contemporary issues.
